Vote NO on GOP's latest attempt to game the system

The amendment on your April ballot is a bad one, indeed, as it would enshrine in the state constitution one of the most odious voting barriers in the country – the voter ID law. The fact is, Wisconsin already has a voter ID law, one of the strictest in the country.

Vote NO on GOP's latest attempt to game the system

For the fourth time in the past three election cycles the Wisconsin GOP is attempting to amend the state constitution. Amendments to the Constitution are meant to be used rarely and for matters of grave public concern. In fact, this third one – like the two in August that failed and the one in November which passed – is another attempt to make it harder to vote in the state.

Taking away voting rights is surely not what the framers had in mind when the subject of constitutional amendments was introduced. The Republicans' rationale for this amendment is utterly specious. In fact, voting in Wisconsin is secure and fair and the GOP can point to no evidence to suggest otherwise.

Yet, aware that their policies are massively unpopular and with new fair maps that no longer guarantee non-competitive districts, curtailing voting is their last-gasp strategy.

The amendment on your April ballot is a bad one, indeed, as it would enshrine in the state constitution one of the most odious voting barriers in the country – the voter ID law. The fact is, Wisconsin already has a voter ID law, one of the strictest in the country.

The amendment goes a step further in inserting the word “valid” in its language regarding what constitutes an acceptable ID. This will be open to interpretation and will open the door to opportunities for the GOP to start tossing out anything they arbitrarily deem invalid. Once that door is open – and enshrined in the Constitution – there’s no going back. At least now, there are chances to improve the voter ID law so as to tear down barriers to voting while making sure our elections are still fair and secure.

Vote No on April 1 on this latest attempt by the GOP to game the system in its favor.
