The Museum at the Castle

Black History is American History.  The History Museum at the Castle has an outstanding popup exhibit called “A Stone of Hope”, which focuses on the Black experience in the Fox Cities.

The exhibit provides an opportunity to learn about both historic and contemporary experiences of African Americans in the Fox Valley area, from early migration to the present day.  It provides a deeper understanding of local history and the ongoing journey for equality.

When the exhibit is ‘on the road’, it can be viewed virtually, making it accessible to a wider audience.  You will find the link to the exhibit on the Museum’s  website.

In addition to “A Stone of Hope”, the History Museum at the Castle features other popular exhibits highlighting the social and cultural history in the Appleton area. Some of the notable exhibits include:

  1. “Our Afghan Neighbors”: This exhibit explores the stories of Afghan refugees who have resettled in the Fox Valley. It highlights the challenges and triumphs of Afghan families as they adjust to life in a new country and community.
  2. “(In)visible”: Focused on homelessness in Appleton, this exhibit seeks to raise awareness about the complexities and realities of homelessness in the area. It showcases personal stories, statistics, and the work of local organizations addressing the issue.
  3. “We Stand on Their Shoulders”: This exhibit delves into the history of women’s suffrage in Wisconsin, celebrating the tireless efforts of women who fought for the right to vote.

The History Museum at the Castle has become a vital resource for preserving and sharing the history of Appleton and the surrounding Fox Valley area. The building, purchased by the Historical Society in 1985, was originally constructed as a Masonic temple and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
