It’s always a treat to take in a movie at the movie theater.  Maybe it’s the smell of the popcorn that signals it’s time to stop everything and just enjoy a movie. No pausing the movie to answer the phone or let the dog out or tackle some work that needs doing. Maybe it’s the sense of community when everyone is laughing or crying together. Even if you go alone, you are not alone.

Conclave has received rave reviews. It is based on Robert Harris’ book of the same name.   It follows the papal conclave of cardinals at the Vatican, which is tasked with selecting the pope’s successor following his unexpected death. Seems timely considering the serious health issues of Pope Francis, the current leader of the Catholic Church.

Conclave is best described as a political thriller with fast action, lots of intrigue, and great acting. Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, is responsible for administering the conclave. It takes two-thirds vote by the electing cardinals to name a successor. White smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney signals that a new pope has been elected. Black smoke indicates that no successor has been named. Various factions emerge, including a conservative wing and a liberal wing, which also seem timely.

Conclave has received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Other nominees for Best Picture are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel, Boys, The Substance, and Wicked. The 97th annual Oscars will be held on Sunday evening, March 2, and can be viewed live on ABC and Hulu.

If you’re looking to watch it before Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, Conclave is available on Peacock or check out your local movie theater.  Highly recommended.
