The Winnebago System Is the only location in Wisconsin where sturgeon can be harvested with a spear. The Winnebago System consists of Lake Winnebago (Wisconsin’s largest inland lake) and the Upper Lakes (Butte des Morts, Winneconne, and Poygan). The average ice depth on Lake Winnebago in early February is 16 inches, great for anglers. Remember, no ice is always safe. Check with local marinas regarding ice depth, pressure cracks or areas of weak ice. Areas close to shore are safer. Also, be aware of rapidly changing weather. Safety tips are offered on the Winnebago County Sheriff Department’s website.
