Celebrate 'Public Schools Week' February 24-28

That is why Wisconsin –  and every state – has incorporated public education in its state constitution.  More than 85 percent of Wisconsin kids are educated in our public schools. It is where we place our hopes for our children's future.

Celebrate 'Public Schools Week' February 24-28

From the fall football game to the spring band concert, from the theater production to the weekend debate meet, and so much more, our local public school is the heart of our community. Public schools proudly serve all students because all students deserve educational opportunities that meet their needs.  It is where diversity is celebrated and teamwork is valued. Both are fundamental to our democracy.

Public Education means education that is publicly financed, accountable to the public, and accessible to all students. It is often described as the cornerstone of our economy, our democracy and our society. That is why Wisconsin –  and every state – has incorporated public education in its state constitution.  More than 85 percent of Wisconsin kids are educated in our public schools. It is where we place our hopes for our children's future.

There is plenty to celebrate during “Public Schools Week.” Take time to acknowledge the hard work of teachers, staff, students and families in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Spread the good news that happens every day in our public schools. Visit your local public school (cookies are always welcome). Attend a play or concert and take in the exciting things our kids are doing.

Good things are happening! Wisconsin has moved up to 6th in the nation in education.  But, there are challenges.  Contact your state representatives and express your support for increased funding for special education and mental health. Become involved in a public education advocacy group such as Fox Cities Advocates for Public Education or Wisconsin Public Education Network.

Whether you have kids in school or not, we all want to live in a community with a great quality of life. It all comes down to having strong public schools. Be a Public School Champion!
